Not all of them are good, as it depends on who's mixing/mastering them, but when it's done well it's stunning. I especially like anything Steven Wilson has done, as well as Genesis, the recent Pink Floyd titles (Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here), and even the sadly forgotten Toy Matinee.

I completely agree with you that any time an album is re-released with a new mix, the original mix should also be included. That's something that most artists/labels fail to do, which is unfair to us collectors.

As for Zappa, I'm also a fan, and several of the CDs I own include the overdubbed versions...and those are the only ones I know because I never owned the original LPs. The Who did something similar with their reissues in the 90s, by including not just different mixes but also replacing some guitar parts. Instead of including them as bonus tracks, they replaced the original track and forced collectors to keep their original versions. Not much we can do about that. Artists aren't always the best judges of their own music.

I'm expecting copies of the CDs & DVD from the "Aqualung" deluxe box set from a friend of mine in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know my thoughts about them when I get a chance to listen.

As always, it's a pleasure discussing music with you.

Be well.
RichAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1661993744104671816.post-18296722669812684872011-11-21T16:28:15.735+01:002011-11-21T16:28:15.735+01:00Sorry for the late answer, Rich!
First of all I h...Sorry for the late answer, Rich!

First of all I have to say I generally do appreciate Steve Wilson's way of treating albums. Some of the albums really came to life, for example King Crimson's "Island": its original mix was very dull. This said, I think that, if we are going to remix an album we should include the original version as well, which is not the case here. Being a Frank Zappa collector this is an issue particoularely frustrant to me: the original 1968 version of "Cruising with Ruben & The Jets" was made available on CD just last year. Up to that date, you had to look for a vinyl rip of it because all the CDs contained the overdubbed version.
As for the 25th anniversary edition... yeah, I read about it being terrible me too, but I kinda disagree. After all pervious CD editions had the intro to the title-track shortened and the ending to "Wind Up" chopped up. The 25th anniversary sounds fine to me, what were exactly the problems?

I don't think I'll buy the DVD+Blu Ray version, because it is too much expensive for me (I'm still at university, I don't have a job). Also because it won't contain new outtakes, which was my main interest. Also I'm unable to play sorrounded mixes, which is a shame because apparently some of them were pretty good (Genesis, Roxy Music's "Avalon"). Anyway, if you do, please discuss it here, as I'm interested to know what goes on on that version!

Best wishes,
JacopoJacopo Munerattihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09029998927958143041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1661993744104671816.post-11798189619167825862011-11-16T22:09:03.695+01:002011-11-16T22:09:03.695+01:00Hello, Jacopo. Thanks to Google Translator, I was ...Hello, Jacopo. Thanks to Google Translator, I was able to translate your writing into English, and the first thing I read was this review of the remixed/remastered Aqualung. I've been hearing nothing but stellar reviews on this package, from people who are VERY picky about the sound of their favorite albums. Yours is the first mediocre review, yet based on what you read I completely understand your complaints. How does this new version compare to the 25th anniversary edition, which is generally considered a terrible remaster (although I enjoyed it when it was released)?

I enjoyed the Genesis remixes (and surround sound mixes) for what they were: new interpretations of existing recordings, but they didn't replace the originals. I get the sense that the same thing has happened with "Aqualung," which I find surprising, especially because of Steven Wilson's involvement. His mixing work on King Crimson as well as his own recordings (solo, Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man, etc) have been nothing but brilliant.

I have not purchased the new version of "Aqualung" yet, as I need to watch what I spend my money on these days. I'm most interested in the surround sound mix. It sounds like you only purchased the 2-CD version and not the very expensive box set, which includes the DVD with the surround sound mix. Will you buy that in the future?

Thanks for your review. I look forward to going back through your archives when I have some free time, now that I can translate your writing. I hope you're doing well.

Sincerely,
